It is estimated that the prevalence of asthma may be as high as 15% of the population in the UK. However, approximately 50% of asthmatics remain undiagnosed, and of those that are diagnosed 50% are under-treated. Sub-optimally managed asthma results in considerable mortality, morbidity and cost to the NHS.
Anaxsys Technology has developed an innovative diagnostic device to enable the rapid and accurate diagnosis of asthma, including within babies, infants and younger children; which has not been possible to date. The device has also been designed to monitor a patients ongoing asthma status, with a view to facilitating better control of the disease through the use of more accurate drug dosages.
SEGF initially invested £250,000 to enable the company to commence clinical trials and provide additional working capital. It has since led two further syndicated funding rounds to support the full commercialisation of the devices, taking its total investment up to £905,000. |
